Camp Little Shot is a free, week-long camp for children with diabetes. The camp, held at Rock Eagle 4-H camp in Eatonton, Georgia, offers an environment of fun and good character building. Gaining knowledge about their disease is key to survival. The life expectancy of a child with diabetes may only be 30 years, due to a lack of understanding in caring for themselves and living in emotional denial of their disease, resulting in unhealthy lifestyles.
The Dunham Fund grant will help defray costs for 85 campers ages 6 to 18. In addition to enjoying traditional camp activities – swimming, hiking, canoeing and crafts – campers will be educated on gaining greater control of their diabetes, self-respect and a desire to help others. Many of the dedicated staff who work as nurses, dieticians and physicians were once campers themselves and giving back to their cherished community.
