Dunham Fund provided $25,000 to seed the $100,000 first phase budget for the Delta Institute, a collaboration with the Donor’s Forum and The Cara Program. The grant will provide funding to map Illinois’s nonprofit-led social enterprise field to enable philanthropic and capital partners to build a strong infrastructure to support nonprofit-led social enterprise. The data gathered in this mapping project will better position nonprofits seeking to create social enterprises by making them aware of successful and unsuccessful financial and programmatic models. The study will better align social enterprise impact investors and social entrepreneurs around a shared set of expectations and assumptions. Unlike traditional nonprofit programs, social enterprises (i.e. Goodwill Industries) want to rely primarily on earned income from the marketplace, leveraging supply and demand and other market forces to reach a level of scale greater than that fueled by grant funding alone.
