Payable over two years in 2015 and 2016, this Dunham Fund grant will support the Friends of Aurora After-School Programs, specifically targeting second grade students in English. The grant is contingent upon the current director’s continuous management of the program. Trained, supervised reading mentors will travel to four School District 129 schools (Hall, McCleery, Greenman and Smith elementary schools) during the 2015-2016 school year to teach second grade children, selected by the schools’ Reading Specialist, to read in English. LMC para-professionals will be paid a stipend to supervise the after-school programs, check out library books, and troubleshoot the use of school computers by the students. The reading mentors will work with classroom teachers and parents to help their students meet the Accelerated Reader goals. This one-on-one program has successfully helped students to read in English who have come from countries as diverse as Mexico, Russia, Togo, Thailand, Burma, Afghanistan and Sierra Leone.
